In an online class, all course activity occurs online; there are no required real-time or on campus meetings. All content is through Canvas. You can complete coursework at any time once it’s available, but it must be submitted by the due dates set by the instructor.
In a real-time online class, course meetings occur virtually on Zoom. The course meetings occur on scheduled days and times. Instructors will use Canvas to share grades and other class content, such as assignments, documents, discussions, and announcements.
In a hybrid class, course activity occurs online and face-to-face at ɫɫ. It is required to do both. The face-to-face meetings occur on scheduled days and times. Instructors may use Canvas to share assignments, documents, discussions, and announcements.
In a HyFlex class, all course meetings are held face-to-face at ɫɫ or may also be attended virtually, via Zoom. The course meetings occur on scheduled days and times. Instructors may use Canvas to share assignments, documents, discussions, and announcements. Assessments, like mid-terms or finals will be the same exam for online or face-to-face students.
Online Learning Services offers support and resources for students in online classes, including tech tools and guidance to help you succeed.
Online classes are like traditional classes, but they take place through Canvas. You’ll access course materials, participate in discussions, complete assignments, and communicate with your instructor and classmates. Since most of the work is done independently at home, you'll need good time management and self-discipline.
Log in to Canvas with your student email and password. Go to the "Dashboard" to find and enter your classes.
Your online class will appear on Canvas by the first day of the semester. To access Canvas, look at our Canvas 101 page. Your instructor will likely email you a few days before the semester (to your ɫɫ email) with information about the course.
You’ll need a computer or laptop with a good internet connection. Some classes may also need a webcam and microphone. Phones, tablets, and Chromebooks are not ideal for online classes since they may not support all course materials.

The best way to contact your instructor is via email. All instructor emails follow the same pattern: firstname.lastname@imperial.edu (Example: john.doe@imperial.edu ). When emailing your instructor, include relevant information such as the course name, your name, etc. You can also message your instructor through Canvas inbox.
