Education Protection Account (Prop. 30)

Proposition 30 was passed by California voters in November 2012 and went into effect in January 2013.  It raised the state's general sales tax by a quarter of a cent for four years and the income taxes for people who make at least $250,000 by up to 3 percentage points for seven years.  It is projected to raise an average of $6 billion annually for the state's general fund and education. This is the first general tax Californians has passed in two decades.

As a result of Proposition 30, the Education Protection Account (EPA) was created to provide local educational agencies (LEAs) with general purpose state aid funding pursuant to Prop 30. In order to maintain transparency to the public, all LEAs shall annually publish on their web site an account of all Prop 30 funds received and details on the manner in which monies are spent.
